7 Habits of Happy Teachers

1. They create spaces where they like to be.

As a studio owner, it's important to create a space where you, other teachers and your clients look forward to spending their time. When designing your ideal Pilates studio, incorporate elements that inspire (think: soft lighting, greenery, and uplifting photos or artwork on the walls).

Keep things clean and orderly so your mind is clutter-free. A clutter-free space allows you to teach fluidly and stress-free without searching for props or worrying about your studio's appearance.

2. They practice self-care.

The old adage holds true: it's important to take care of yourself, so you can be there for others.

Sleep, hydrate, eat well, and do something kind for yourself like getting a massage, taking a steam, going for a walk, or our favorite go-to: breaking out that emergency chocolate and chilling on the sofa. The more relaxed you feel, the better you can serve your clients.

3. They set clear boundaries.

It can be challenging to separate clients from friends, and, often, they are one in the same. When we spend a great deal of time in close company, the intimate details we share about our bodies can migrate into intimate details of our lives.

It’s important to set clear boundaries. Don’t feel obligated to share details you’re not comfortable sharing or to listen to a client who brings negative emotions to his session on a regular basis. Taking on extra baggage can have negative effects on your own life and business.

Remember: Pilates may feel like therapy for some, but you are not a therapist.

4. They keep learning.

Take a workshop or join other Pilates classes, including online Pilates classes and tutorials, and dive deeper into something you’re curious about. With each class, you will gain knowledge and self-confidence, and you'll feel inspired. Your students will see this in your teaching and keep coming back for more.

5. They find a mentor.

An ounce of experience is worth a pound of theory. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are times when we just don’t have the answers, or we don’t even know the question to ask. Rather than ruminating on all the options or shooting in the dark, talk to someone who’s been there. Reach out to a person you admire in the industry or in your local community; you can even reach out to a friend you trust. Ask them to coffee and listen to what they have to say. You don’t have to follow their advice, but you’ll have more tools in your toolkit to work with when you ultimately make your decisions.

6. They spend time outside of the studio doing things they enjoy.

The next time you find yourself feeling isolated, burnt out or simply uninspired, look outward: take up a new non-Pilates hobby or revisit a favorite old pastime, take a road trip or a much-needed holiday, or spend more time with your family and friends. Rejuvenate yourself with the people and activities that mean the most to you and renew your creativity, spirit and sense of purpose.

7. They volunteer in their community.

Find time to volunteer in a way that feels effortless and important at the same time. Volunteer your time as a Pilates teacher to underserved communities, host an event to promote Pilates in your own community, employ your speaking skills fundraising for a cause you care about, or do something totally unrelated. Giving back feels good and can recharge you for the daily routine of teaching.

Great advice - the importance of self care is so easy to lose sight of especially when busy. Love!!
