Neutral or imprint

I am a bit confused. Are we aiming to perform all exercises with a neutral spine? Some open kinetic chain exercises I find this impossible and my lumbar spine lengthens on the mat, I have strong abdominals though. Single leg stretch I cannot maintain neutral. I would appreciate some thought on this please. I know every persons body is different and it depends on the individual.
