Hello all, I am working on getting fit again after decades of deskwork and couch surfing. I find that am barely able to do the most basic fundamental class without using my shoulders, neck and thigh muscles to do the work of my core. Does anyone have any advice on how to focus in on and fire up a set of core muscles that seem to have completely "vanished"? Thanks!
My experience with Pilates I the beginning was much frustration and discouragement. I’ll say in all my physical endeavors, it’s been the toughest. However, that said, it’s had the greatest rewards. I’m closing in on 52 and my posture has steadily improved, my core strength is greater than at any point, and my flexibility is off the charts compared pre Pilates.
There were many days of frustration for sure, but consistency is very key. Also I might add, a one on one instructor from time to time to correct bad habits. I remember thinking how is this possible (certain movements)? My instructor was making me perform the I’m possible! For instance a two way stretch. What? She told me to fake it til I make it. A year and a half later, many of these concepts are now present and I’m blown away at my progress. Now I’m moving onto “project exercises” Of course this is very encouraging. If only I had stayed away from the bulky weights and picked up Pilates 30 years ago.
Congratulations on choosing Pilates. Stay with it. Even when it sucks. I’m sitting on my mat right now about to fire up a mat video. I don’t feel like it, but damn, when I’m done I feel so much better and I stand up straight! Good luck!
