The Top 5 Pilates Props for Travel

Pilates Anytime teacher Gia Calhoun recommends the five best Pilates props that serve as ideal companions for your travels.

In 2018, I travelled to Australia for two weeks on my first vacation in six years. The Sydney Opera House, kangaroos, koalas, and, of course, Pilates sessions with some of our Aussie Pilates teachers were all on my list of things to experience. Yet the long flight and hours of sightseeing left me stiff and tired. I knew the flight would be long, but I didn't realize the toll it would take on my body, especially since it had been awhile since I had taken such a long flight (16 hours total!).

While in Sydney, I was lucky enough to have Pilates sessions with Sally Anderson and Joanne Bezzina. Both sessions helped relieve the tension and compression in my body from the long flight. Nonetheless, there are a lot of small Pilates props that could have helped during my time in Sydney, especially after daily, 10-mile walks around the city.

Below you will find a few small props I wish I had brought with me, all of which can easily fit into your carry-on luggage! No matter how long your flight or how many hours you spend walking each day, these props can help revive and relax you from one attraction to the next.

1. Overball

When deflated, the Overball fits perfectly in a small carry-on. I like to use it under my thoracic spine to open my chest and under my pelvis to help stabilize it. After sitting for so long, the Overball really helps me feel more open. Start practicing with our Overball classes.

2. Theraband

Therabands fold up easily, lie flat, and can even fit in a handbag. Use them to open up your chest and to mobilize your feet and ankles. Check out some of our Theraband classes.

3. Magic Circle

I use an Magic Circle that could have easily fit into my carry-on luggage. I spent so much time on my legs and feet, it would've been nice to give some attention to my upper body. Check out some of our Magic Circle classes.

4. Tennis Ball

Use a Tennis Ball to massage your arches, heels, and balls of feet, as well as other muscles that become stiff from lack of movement. Try one of our Tennis Ball classes.

5. Parasetter Minis

The long flight made my feet and ankles swell and the amount of walking I was doing each day didn't help with the stiffness I felt. The Parasetter Minis would've helped me stretch my calves and wake up my feet and ankles. Start using the props with one of our Parasetter classes.

Next time you travel, stow these small Pilates props in your travel bags. You'll be so glad you did. I definitely will be packing these small props on my next trip!

I have started traveling with balls and a Theraband. if I have room, I also take a mat and foam roller. I prefer Yoga Tune-Up balls to tennis balls as they have more grip and I like how you can put two together in a bag. The Overball is my latest purchase and I'll take it on my next trip.

I put a foam roller in my bag with my skis for ski trips! A must before getting on the slopes.
